Paris's most famous department stores

If you're aiming for speed and ease, you could pick up many presents in some of the city's top department stores, particularly Printemps and Galleries Lafayette (Métro: Chaussée d'Antin), which are next to one another on Boulevard Haussmann. Both department stores have several floors of designer fashion, perfume and cosmetics, as well as food halls selling high-end gourmet products that make great gifts for foodies.
If you're after designer goods, you'll find many of the most famous on Avenue Montaigne (Métro Champs: Elysées Clémenceau) and rue Faubourg Saint-Honoré (Métro: Tuileries or Palais Royale). Young fashionistas will love rue Etienne Marcel and Place des Victoires (Métro: Etienne Marcel) or the newest, emerging labels on rue Charonne and rue Keller (Métro: Charonne or Bastille).

Boutique shops

If designer labels don't impress you, seek out Les Créateurs des Abbesses, Montmartre's Artisan boutiques clustered along a few small streets in the old Bohemian neighbourhood. These small shops sell unusual jewellery, clothing and various other alternative goods that can make good off-beat presents. Head for Rue Houdon, Rue d'Orsel, Rue des Martyrs, Rue des Abbesses, Rue Yvonne-Le-Tac.

Rare books and antiques

If it's a nice, crisp winter's day, you can find old, new and collectable books on outdoor stalls next to the River Seine. The Latin Quarter is also home to lots of old book shops, around the old University neighbourhood.
For antiques and collectibles, take the Métro to Saint Germain des Prés to explore rue du Seine, rue du Bac and rue Jacob, which are home to several antique shops, and at the weekend visit the flea market at Saint-Ouen (Métro: Porte de Clignancourt).
